The purpose of this letter is a sand one, as it is to request removal of a name from your Checkerboard mailing list.

My father, Stan Lambert, 1/394, died Nov. 26, 2011.

When we were children, Dad rarely spoke about his war experiences, but in the last 20 years of his life, he shared many stories. One thing he enjoyed a great deal was his interviews and dialogue with Bob Humphrey as he wrote the division’s history, “Once Upon A Time in War.”

Dad proudly gave copies to all family members upon its publication. I also remember how Dad was surprised when a story he told Humphrey was attributed to another person. Upon reflection, Dad realized he wasn’t alone experiencing these events. He then found it interesting to see how others saw the same thing, yet came away with different impressions and perspective.

Dad always enjoyed reading the Checkerboard and keeping up with the division’s happenings and of course, the people.

I miss my times with Dad and his stories about the war, both good and bad. I can see in many cases how these experiences shaped him and his perspective on life. We miss him dearly as another of America’s greatest generation has passed.
