  • 99th President B.O. Wilkins dies

    B.O. Wilkins, K/393, who began his second stint as president of the 99th Infantry Division Association in July 2010, at the Louisville Convention, died Jan. 11, 2011, following a sudden and brief battle with sarcomatoid lung cancer with metastases to his brain. Born Aug. 6, 1923, at Luxora AR, he was the son of Byron O. Wilkins Sr. and Katharine Wyatt Wilkins.

  • Membership roster included in this issue

    This issue of The Checkerboard features the current roster of members of the 99th Infantry Division Association. It has been some time since a roster issue was printed. The alphabetical list contains members with expiration dates of 2010 and later. Those with a 2009 expiration date are listed at the end. They are not receiving The Checkerboard. Some have moved, lost interest in the association, or died.

    Gerald G. Toy, 86, Portland OR, died Feb. 16, 2011. He worked as an actuary for an insurance company before opening the Portland office of Milliman & Robertson and served as vice president and consulting actuary until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two children; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Herbert H. Richter Jr., 86, S/099, of Houston TX, died Sept. 28, 2010. A corporal during the war, he drove a Jeep delivering messages and played clarinet in the Army band. After the war, he became a commercial artist and worked for advertising departments of Sakowitz and Battlestein’s department stores and the Houston Chronicle. He and his wife, Mary Alice attended several 99th reunions. He is survived by four children and four grandchildren.
