My dad, Harry Valdespino, fought with the 99th. He was a heavy machine gunner in M/394. He went in as a replacement sometime in December 1944, and fought till he was war-wounded on April 9, 1945. He lost his left arm at the shoulder.

My dad died Sept. 12, 2011. Nothing was more important to him than having fought for his country.

I remember he used to get the Checkerboard. He enjoyed it immensely. Somewhere along the line he stopped receiving the paper. I guess as his health and eyesight deteriorated, his membership lapsed.

I think I will enjoy the Checkerboard.
